Tom Cruise is NOT Jack Reacher! These are the top actors (in my opinion) that should have had the role of Jack Reacher in the new movie. Just remember that Tom Cruise's height is not the only bad thing about the movie, there are lots of reasons the fans do NOT want Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher. Jack Reacher - He Called Me a Hooker: Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) gets a provoking visit from a girl named Sandy (Alexia Fast) and her fight happy friends.BUY.

Echo Burning is the fifth novel in the Jack Reacher series written by Lee Child. It was published in 2001 by Putnam in America and Bantam in the United Kingdom. It is written in the third person.

Plot summary[edit]

Jack Reacher breaks a bully's nose and finger after being repeatedly provoked in a Texas saloon, so when the bully turns out to be a local cop and shows up with three of his colleagues the following day to arrest him, Reacher decides it's time to move on. He chooses hitchhiking as the fastest escape and hooks up with a driver of Mexican heritage named Carmen Greer. She says that the only reason she stopped, however, is because she has a problem: Her tax-evading husband, Sloop, is coming out of prison soon, and he will inevitably continue beating her as he did so many times before, especially because he knows she was the one who informed on him. Carmen has been diligently searching for candidates to kill him, and she thinks Reacher's military background may qualify him for the job. Reacher initially refuses and even leaps out of the car and back into the sweltering 110-degree (Fahrenheit) heat, but then he expeditiously changes his mind and agrees to accept a ride back to her ranch. It is there that Carmen, her husband Sloop and the rest of his family live, and Reacher is promising nothing more than to look into the situation and, if necessary, to act as her bodyguard. Carmen and Jack then proceed to pick up her daughter Ellie, who gets on well with Reacher.

Meanwhile, two other groups are introduced: a group of watchers, composed of two men and a boy who have been staking out the ranch, and a trio of hitmen (two men and one woman) who subsequently kill the first group on the orders of their mutual employer after murdering Al Eugene, the lawyer who had secured Sloop's release.

Carmen and Reacher arrive back at the ranch, but Reacher does not receive a warm welcome from Sloop's bigoted mother, brother, or the two ranchers who work there. Reacher gets the Greers to hire him as a wrangler, and teaches Carmen how to handle a firearm. The family orders the other ranchers to dispose of Reacher; he subdues them and returns unharmed. Sloop then arrives, and claims Jack is trespassing; he is arrested and removed by Texas Rangers.

En route, the rangers are called back: Sloop has been shot and killed, and the authorities charge Carmen with the murder after finding a gun. Furthermore, while she is incarcerated, she suddenly confesses to the murder and assiduously denies legal help from Alice Amanda Aaron, the pro bono attorney whom Reacher procures for her.

Assisted by Hack Walker, the Pecos Countydistrict attorney and an old friend of Sloop's, Jack and Alice discover a cover-up related to the murder of several illegal immigrants by Hack, Sloop, and Eugene. Reacher concludes that Hack orchestrated the murders in order to protect his election chances, and that he is pressuring Carmen to confess by threatening Ellie's life. Reacher kills two of the hitmen in an ambush and confronts Hack at the ranch, whereupon Sloop's mother kills him as a fire breaks out and burns down their house. After tracking down and subduing the third man at a motel, preventing him from killing Ellie, Reacher leaves Carmen to start a new life as he prepares to look for a ride out of Texas.

Production[edit]

Child finished writing Echo Burning in March 2000. The book was released in the United Kingdom and its territories on 2 April 2001, and the American publication followed on 25 June of the same year.[1]

The original idea for Echo Burning came from two sources. The first was an idea he had in which he wondered what it would be like for a woman whose husband was returning home from jail, but didn't want him to return. He also took inspiration from seeing the grave of the gunfighterClay Allison who 'never killed a man that did not need killing.' He wondered what it would be like if Reacher was confronted by a man he had been told needed killing.[2]

Child wanted Carmen Greer to appear as a character whom readers would not know whether or not to trust. He has also said how he wanted Alice Amanda Aaron, the Harvard educated, vegetarian, lesbian, attorney Reacher hires, to be a reflection of how diverse America is; he can be quoted as saying 'she's totally normal in New York, but a freak in Texas.' From a best-selling series of novels, to two blockbuster movies, and now to the small-screen it seems the Jack Reacher series is really enjoying a long-run of popularity.

To the delight of fans, Amazon recently announced that it will be filming its own action-packed version of Jack Reacher. The Amazon series will still be based on the famous novels by Lee Child, just as the movies were, but that’s where the similarities seem to end.

Unlike the big-screen versions of Jack Reacher, where Tom Cruise was the star, Amazon hasn’t yet found their man. At least not that they have announced. The hunt is on and this is only adding to the mystery, intrigue, anticipation, and excitement over the new series.

Early Details About the New Jack Reacher Series

While the biggest piece of information is still under wraps, there are some details that have been released. First, we now know that Amazon wasn’t the only company vying for the rights to develop a series, but it managed to win them.

Nick Santora, the creator of Scorpion, has been chosen as the writer and executive producer. Santora commented on this project and what it means to carry on the Jack Reacher franchise:

“Lee Child has created an incredible character and world; it will be the goal of every writer, producer, actor, executive, and crew member to capture the essence of Mr. Child’s books—and luckily Lee has been there, and will continue to be there, to help guide us along the way in this series. He is the pulse of Reacher.”

It has also been announced that the series will actually be a joint production between Amazon, Paramount Television, and Skydance Television.

The hope for those at Amazon is that Jack Reacher will help the platform continue to capitalize on its success in the action, drama, spy-centered realm which was the case with its version of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. This series stars John Krasinski as Jack Ryan and is currently in its third season.

Fans have also been given the scoop that the first season of the show will be based on the first Jack Reacher novel, which was The Killing Floor.

Jack Reacher Betting Odds

The following entertainment betting odds are courtesy of Bet365:

  • Sullivan Stapleton (+350)
  • Jake McLaughlin (+600)
  • John Krasinski (+600)
  • Matthew McConaughey (+1000)
  • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (+1200)
  • Dolph Lundgren (+1400)
  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (+2000)
  • Chris Hemsworth (+2200)
  • Chris Pratt (+2500)
  • Daniel Craig (+3300)

On the surface, these betting options all offer a positive return on investment. Additionally, this list of actors includes some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. However, as you will notice, it doesn’t include Tom Cruise the actor who brought the character Jack Reacher to life on the big screen.

I just started a Jack Reacher novel & they describe him as 6 foot 5, meanwhile Tom Cruise is playing him in movies….

Why Isn’t Amazon Going With Tom Cruise For Their Series?

Before we dive into the betting options, let’s discuss why Amazon chose to create this Jack Reacher series without using Tom Cruise.

The biggest voice against Cruise continuing on as the title character came from the author and creator Lee Child who made the following comments about Cruise:

“He had his own investment in it, he was going to argue against it. It sounds extremely patronizing but I think it’s good for him. He’s too old for this stuff. He’s 57, he needs to move on, transition to being a character actor…. He could get another 20 years out of it. He has the talent. He’s a terrific guy, very considerate, good fun.”

Another knock on Cruise is that he’s too short. At 5’7”, Cruise is much shorter than Reacher in the books who stands at 6’5”. So, keep that in mind while we look at the following betting options to see who could end up playing Jack Reacher in Amazon’s series.

Examining the Betting Odds for Jack Reacher Candidates

Time to take a deeper dive into the betting options and identify realistic entertainment betting possibilities.

Sullivan Stapleton (+350)

When it comes to fitting the description of Jack Reacher, Sullivan Stapleton is a strong candidate. This Australian actor is six feet tall and has played in many action shows and films.

For those unfamiliar with Stapleton’s work, he’s currently one of the main stars in NBC’s Blindspot TV show, which is entering its 5th and final season. Additionally, he became a star in Cinemax’s hit series Strike Back.

While he may not have the star power of some of the others on the list, he is an actor that is on the rise and this role could certainly take his career to another level. I’m a big fan of Stapleton since his time in Strike Back and I certainly would love to see him as Jack Reacher.

Jake McLaughlin (+600)

Here’s a guy who not only has the acting chops, but was an actual American soldier. He became famous for his role as Gordon Bonner in In the Valley of Elah and also had a starring role in the TV show Quantico.

As for his physical appearance, once again here’s an actor that could easily fit the bill. At 6’1”, this former soldier has the acting skills, the real world experience, and the look to play such a popular character.

However, at +600 odds, I feel like McLaughlin is slightly overvalued. There are a few options on this list that might be better suited.

John Krasinski (+600)

For fans of the popular television series The Office there has been nothing better than to watch John Krasinski’s rise to fame over the years. Not only is he an excellent actor that can play both serious and funny roles, we also learned he can not only star in movies but also direct them, and write a screenplay.

So what’s the tie with Jack Reacher? Well, Krasinski is currently playing the title role in Amazon’s other spy drama – Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

So, why not step in and give a shot at Jack Reacher?

With that said, I’m not a fan of Krasinski playing both of these roles. It’s overkill if you ask me and Amazon should look to keep these as separate brands. I would avoid this option as I just don’t see Amazon allowing Krasinski to play both Jack Ryan and Jack Reacher.

Matthew McConaughey (+1000)

While some may think of Matthew McConaughey as more of a drama actor at this stage in his career, the fact is that he’s capable of all kinds of roles.

During his years as an actor, he has tackled just about every genre out there and typically with a whole lot of critical acclaim. His list of awards is vast including the Oscar for Best Actor back in 2014 for the Dallas Buyers Club.

Jack Reacher Movies In Order

Reacher

Now here’s the thing, McConaughey is one of those that may not seem like a great fit, but the more you think about it – the more it make sense.

McConaughey has the wit and dry sense of humor that Jack Reacher is known for, he’s fit enough to take on an action-packed role, he has the charm needed, and he is the type of actor who embraces roles completely by giving it his all.

With that said, and as big of a fan of McConaughey’s as I am, I just don’t see him in this role. He’s closer to a Tom Cruise than a Dwayne Johnson.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (+1200)

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is a Danish actor who has managed to carve a real name out for himself thanks to his role as “The King slayer” Jamie Lanister in The Game of Thrones HBO series.

I was a huge fan of Lanister’s storyline arc and Coster-Waldau’s acting in G.O.T. as he did a fantastic job throughout the entire series. He’s a guy that would also fit the physical description at 6’2” and even has that swag that Jack Reacher seems to possess.

Coster-Waldau has also proven that he can easily step into an action-packed role and transcend the screen. This could be a great way for Coster-Waldau to secure his spot as a TV mainstay and transition from a conflicted, dark hero to a butt kicking, American hero.

I like these odds at +1200 and would actually prefer him over most other actors on this list.

Dolph Lundgren (+1400)

Dolph Lundgren burst into the Hollywood scene for his role as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. He was the massive Soviet Union boxer who had an enormous presence on the screen.

While Lundgren is not actually from Russia, rather he is Swedish, Lundgren has gone on to play a number of roles in the action genre. In fact, his resume features more than 40 roles in this genre.

Besides being an actor and filmmaker, Lundgren is also a martial artist and a chemical engineer. One could say that he’s a jack of all trades.

There’s actually been talk of him playing the role dating back to when the movies were first being cast. The rumors seem to be picking up again and swirling on social media platforms. The one knock I have against Lundgren playing Jack Reacher is his age.

Remember, Lee Child basically said a 57 year old Tom Cruise was too old for this role in Amazon’s series. Well, Lundgren is 62 years old, which puts him out of the realm of being a realistic option. I would avoid Ivan Drago for this bet.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (+2000)

When it comes to big stars, who can turn just about every movie and franchise into pure gold, look no further than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Any producer out there, who has a script in the action genre, would be a fool not to consider casting Johnson. His name is behind some of the most notable and profitable series and stand-alone movies over the past decade.

These highly successful Hollywood roles include the reboot of the Jumanji series, his role of Luke Hobbs in the Fast and the Furious franchise which spawned a spin-off movie for him, Baywatch, San Andreas, Rampage, and even Moana just to name a few.

We also can’t forget The Rock’s massive success in the WWE. The former pro wrestler turned the industry upside down and used it as a stepping stone to arguably becoming the world’s #1 action star.

Johnson’s massive physique makes him perfect for the role of Jack Reacher as nobody else in Hollywood has the blend of acting and physical skills that Johnson has. In fact, the star recently commented on how his looks have helped him stand out from the pack and land major roles.

Well, it helped him land just about every role he tried out for except Jack Reacher in the hit films. To this day, Johnson still acknowledges the burn that he felt when Tom Cruise beat him out in the Jack Reacher films:

“I’ve been a lucky son of a bi**h that they’ve been created and designed for me – except Jack Reacher. Now, this was ten years ago, and I was in a much different place, I recognise that. Tom was the biggest movie star in the world, and I was not. Look, I didn’t even know if I had a shot for it, but the people around me at that time made me think that I did. I felt like I did, I felt like ‘Why not me?’”

At +2000 odds, I really like Johnson’s value here. Just because he’s a big Hollywood star doesn’t mean he’s above doing TV shows. He played a starring role in the hit series Ballers and still makes appearances on various WWE programming.

Johnson would light Amazon on fire if he were to take the role as Jack Reacher. It could also be a way to springboard this show to the big screen since Johnson is that type of star.

Keep in mind, other major Hollywood stars are doing shows on these streaming platforms. Henry Cavill went from playing Superman on the big screen to playing the main character in the Netflix show The Witcher.

Chris Hemsworth (+2200)

Another big name tied to a very massive franchise thanks to his role of Thor in the Marvel Universe, is Chris Hemsworth.

While Thor may be his most notable role, it’s far from his only role. In fact, as you look at his list of movies there is a real variety which makes him a rather interesting actor from a producer and director’s point of view. Sure he may be a long shot, but not impossible.

There have been a few rumors of him taking over the role for a while now, and that can be attributed to his demeanour, wit, dry sense of humor, and ability to excel in an action role. There’s also the fact that he would fit the physicality of the Jack Reacher from the actual novels.

Hemsworth has also been linked to the possibility of taking over the James Bond franchise after Daniel Craig retires later this year.

Unlike The Rock, I don’t see Hemsworth going from the big screen to the small screen for this role. He’s still got plenty of juice left in the Marvel Universe and a decent shot at James Bond. I would avoid this betting option until we even hear of any substantial links about Hemsworth and this show.

Chris Pratt (+2500)

Jack Reacher Candidate

Here’s another star who has really carved out a niche for himself in the action genre. Chris Pratt has starred in a couple of huge roles over the past few years in some of the biggest highest-grossing movies of our time.

Playing the lead role in both the re-booted Jurassic Park/World series and The Guardians of the Galaxy, which is part of the Marvel Universe, it’s highly unlikely Pratt will sign up for an Amazon production. His crazy schedule alone is what helps to make him such a long shot.

That schedule got even busier for Pratt as he and his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger are having their first child in the near future as they announced that she’s pregnant. Yes, Pratt is the son-in-law of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Although he’s no secret to starring in TV shows, see his appearances on Parks and Recreation, Pratt just feels like a longshot not worth taking a flier on. The Rock is better suited for this role than Pratt is.

Daniel Craig (+3300)

Now, we take a look at the true longshot of the bunch – Daniel Craig. Coming off his stint as the most recent James Bond, it’s clear that Craig has had enough of spy-roles for a while.

Jack Reacher 1 Full Movie

Over his years of playing Bond, there have been a number of interviews conducted by Craig in which he spoke in a less than positive light about the genre, and the fear of being type-casted in a particular role.

The role of Jack Reacher just doesn’t seem like it would be a big enough stretch for him, and therefore it’s highly unlikely that he would sign up. I would expect Craig to take on other roles in films that expand on his acting range and provide him with different challenges.

I would avoid this betting option.

Who Will Play Jack Reacher?

This prop bet is a good start for who might be in the running to play Jack Reacher, but I feel that there are other actors not on this list that could be great choices like: Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, and Chris Evans.

Additionally, I would have loved to see a betting option for The Field. However, since there’s not one, and we have to go with what’s available, I think there are two options here really worth of a wager.

For those wanting a longshot, go with Dwayne Johnson. The Rock would make a great Jack Reacher for Amazon and for Hollywood. He was spurned the first time around, which leads me to think that he could actually be interested in this project.

If you aren’t interested in longshots then go with Sullivan Stapleton. He’s a talented actor who’s stock is on the rise. With Blindspot about to end, Stapleton could be available to hit the ground running with Jack Reacher.

If I can’t have Jason Momoa, Tom Hardy, The Rock, or The Field then I’m all for Damion Scott aka Kurt Weller, aka Sullivan Stapleton becoming the next Jack Reacher.
