With the way the 2018 NCAA Football season has played out, it seems that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are destined to make the playoffs and finish with a perfect season. But as the schedule winds down, there are a couple of tricky matchups that lie ahead for them. One is the now-ranked 19th Syracuse and the other is Northwestern, has slayed a pair of ranked teams in the last playing month. However, if the Irish can get their offense going, they are going to be hard to stop.

Quarterback Ian Book has been doing a great job for the Irish. Since taking over the starting QB role, Books has thrown for at least two touchdowns per game. In five games plus, Book has completed 76.5% of his passes for 1,481 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Playing Good Defense Lately

In their last game against the injury riddled Wisconsin Badgers, senior Clayton Thorson completed just 17 passes, threw for just a total of 167 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. But still, the Wildcats managed to get a 31-17 win because while Thorson struggled, his defense picked up the slack for him. It’s this defense of the Wildcats that worries some Notre Dame backers heading to Saturday’s contest.

Northwestern has been in the middle of the pack all season long in terms of yards allowed and points allowed. But in the last two weeks, the Wildcats defense has been very good as they have allowed an average of 255.5 yards and 16 points per game. The Wildcats, who are on a four game win streak, have also caused four fumbles and two interceptions in their last three games.

Notre Dame Vs Northwestern Spread Clemson

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are 5-0 SU in their last 5 games, 3-0 SU on the road this season and 11-4 SU in their last 15 games against the Big 10. The Northwestern Wildcats are 11-4 SU in their last 15 games at home and 13-3 SU in their last 16 games overall.

The Fighting Irish have a legit shot at finishing the season unbeaten. They only have to finish strong and they know that. With that perfect season in mind, you bet that Notre Dame will be more ready and focused here than they have been all year long.

Notre Dame Vs Northwestern Spread

Northwestern has defeated two ranked teams in the last four weeks and they will surely not be intimidated by the Fighting Irish nor their record. But when the book on this game will be written, I think it will boil down to Notre Dame’s passing, Dexter Williams having a big game and Ian Book taking over.

We’re picking the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to beat the Northwestern Wildcats on 11/3/18.

Both teams are 4-4 ATS in their respective 8 games played this season. Notre Dame is 2-1 ATS in their three road games this season while Northwestern is 2-3 ATS at home this season. The Fighting Irish are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games after winning their previous game by at least 20 points and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games after running for 200+ yards in their previous game. The Wildcats are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games after a victory and are only 1-5 ATS in their last six non-conference games.

Spread Odds: Notre Dame -9.5 (-115), +9.5 (-105)
Odds from Sportsbetting.ag as of 10/31/18

Notre Dame has a good chance of finishing the season unbeaten but against the spread, they have not been as special. The Fighting Irish are unbeaten SU in their last dozen games as favorites of at least 7 points but are 0-6 SU in their last six games when favored by at least seven points. But between the Fight Irish’s struggles against the spread and the Wildcats’ inability to take care of the football, I’m more worried about the latter.

Betting Prediction

Thorson threw three interception against Wisconsin. He also got picked off twice against Michigan State and another two against Akron. Northwestern’s interceptions against elite defenses are documented and considering that Notre Dame is arguably the best defense they will face so far, I’m thinking turnovers which Notre Dame is going to capitalize on and score. Having said that, I think it should be at least a double digit win for the Irish.

Prediction: Notre Dame -9.5

The over is 4-1 in Notre Dame’s last five games played and the over is also 4-1 in the Fighting Irish last five road games. On the other hand, the under is 40-12-11 in the last 53 games played by the Wildcats.

Betting Prediction

The Fighting Irish have averaged 40.4 points in their last five games and when they have their offense going, it’s really hard to stop them. I think the Irish are going to score a lot of points here but the Wildcats are going to give them a good fight. I think Notre Dame scores 40 and the Northwestern gets in at least two scores to cover the total.

The #3 overall Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-0) travel to Illinois this weekend to take on the Northwestern Wildcats (5-3). Kickoff is set for 7:15 PM EST at Ryan Field and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Taking a look at the Week 10 college football odds, Notre Dame opened as a 7.5-point road favorite earlier this week. That line has shifted by half a point after early betting, as the Fighting Irish are currently listed at -8. The total for the game is sitting at 53.5 points.

Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: Northwestern vs Notre Dame

Notre Dame stayed perfect last weekend after an impressive 44-22 victory over Navy. QB Ian Book continued his string of impressive performances as of late, as he has now thrown two or more touchdowns in each of his last five games. Book has racked up 1,481 passing yards and 13 touchdowns on the season so far – he has also completed 76.5% of his passes. There is certainly no shortage of weapons offensively for the Fighting Irish, as the receiving duo of Miles Boykin and Chris Finke have combined for 908 yards and seven touchdowns. Things have looked solid on the ground as well – Notre Dame is currently averaging 188.5 rushing yards per game. RB Dexter Williams has done most of the heavy lifting out of the backfield, running for 512 yards and seven touchdowns in eight games. As a whole, the offense is currently averaging 34.0 points per game (35th overall) on 447.3 yards of total offense.

Things have also been very impressive on the other side of the ball, as the Fighting Irish currently giving up an average of 19.1 points per game (20th overall) on 341.3 total yards of offense (30th overall). Notre Dame has really done a great job of shutting down opposing teams through the air, allowing an average of just 194.4 passing yards per game (32nd).

Northwestern won their fourth consecutive game last weekend after upsetting Wisconsin 31-17 on the road. The Wildcats are really playing inspired football right now and look to be well on their way to another Bowl appearance. However, QB Clayton Thorson will need to play much better here in Week 10 than he did against the Badgers. Thorson only managed to throw for 167 yards and one touchdown while also getting picked off three times. RB Isaiah Brewer was a beast out of the backfield, as the freshman rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown on a whopping 31 carries.

The stifling Northwestern defense really was the big story against Wisconsin last week, as they forced and recovered three fumbles and held the Badgers to just 17 points. The Wildcats are currently allowing 23.6 points per game on 366.8 yards of total offense.

NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: Notre Dame -8

Northwestern has been an extremely tricky team to judge so far this year. They have really played well against ranked opponents over the last several weeks, including winning games against both Michigan State and Wisconsin. However, they have yet to face a team as talented on both sides of the ball as Notre Dame. The problem for the Wildcats heading into Week 10 has been their lackluster play on offense. Thorson is really struggling right now and the defense has continually had to bail him out. I’m not sure they will be able to keep things close for four quarters against a Fighting Irish offense that is averaging over 30 points per game. Notre Dame is also no slouch on defense, as they have held opponents under 20 points per game.

Notre

The Fighting Irish are a very impressive 4-0 ATS over their last four road games. They are also 4-1 ATS in their last five conference games and 4-1 ATS over their last five games overall. Northwestern has managed to cover the spread in five out of their last six games of a 7+ point underdog but are just 1-5 ATS over their last six non-conference games. The Wildcats are also only 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games following a win and 1-4 ATS over their last five home games against teams with a winning road record.

Notre Dame Vs Northwestern Spread Uconn

Northwestern has really been on a roll as of late but I think they might run out of momentum against a tough Notre Dame squad this weekend. The defense has had to rescue an anemic offense that is really struggling to move the ball through the air right now. As long as the spread stays under double-digits, I think the Fighting Irish offer pretty good value in this particular spot. I’ll lay the points and take the road favorite.
